Went out at 3:40 or so this morning and was lucky enough to see Arcturus rise: a hypnotic sight! It was flashing spastically because of the thicker atmosphere nearer the horizon, and glowed a brilliant red, as I have heard that all bright stars do when rising. (This explaining why ancient astronomers used to record Sirius as being red; its most famous and important appearance being when it rose at dawn in Egypt, heralding the approaching flood of the Nile.)
